Tomatoes Hanging Around

I have tomatoes! All of a sudden, it seems, the Topsy-Turvy fruits started reddening up. Tomatoes are so rewarding to grow instead of buy -- they smell amazingly fresh and... well, tomatoey. And they cost less! (At least, doing a single plant this way; I can't speak for full garden boxes of tomato plants.)

We used to have cherry tomatoes in the backyard when I was a kid, but these are full-sized Early Girls. Very firm and sweet. And there were, at the time of the photo, 17 still-green ones queueing up behind.

Food This Week 3

Still shopping the loss leaders and keeping an eye out for sales on staples. Next week we'll probably still be eating from the freezer for the most part. I think August will be a good month to aim for a 50% grocery budget -- that is, half of the usual monthly spending.

Food This Week 2

Freezer eating is still going strong! I'll be picking up a few things from the grocery store, which will restock it to a certain extent, but it's a net emptying. :)

Freezer Inventory: July

I took a rather belated freezer inventory tonight -- considering we've already been eating from the freezer for more than a week! It's a good feeling to be able to supply a couple weeks' worth of meals from the pantry and freezer.

Food This Week

I keep forgetting to take pictures of the produce box when it comes. By the time I remembered this week, I'd already put away potatoes and corn, juiced limes, and made zucchini bread. (This recipe, sans nuts -- although this one looked good, it involved math and then an uneven number of eggs to accommodate the amount of zucchini I had. I ended up short on the smaller batch as it was, but it tastes fine.)
